Toilets for Health with Unilever: Twitter Chat Summary

By Nick Aster

Yesterday, in conjunction with CSRwire, we hosted a twitter chat with Unilever, UNICEF and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) to discuss the issue of sanitation and the ongoing lack of access to improved infrastructure.

Among the recurring themes of the conversation was the need to creatively bring attention to the critical lack of basic sanitation infrastructure in much of the world - as many as a billion people lack any sort of toilet at all.   We discussed how to "market" the problem - to break the conversational taboo that surrounds it.  We also got deeply into discussing the role the NGOs, governments and corporations can play in not only addressing the problem but solving it at a profit.

Possible the most exciting take-a-way statistic came from UNICEF's @team_toiletFor every dollar invested in sanitation $5.50 is generated in productivity and health etc..Its a good economic investment!

Read a storify summary of the choice bits of the conversation below...
