Full details of an inquiry into CSR in Pakistan are to be published
soon. The inquiry has been set up and run by the Securities and
Exchange Commission of Pakistan as part of an initiative on corporate
governance in the country supported by the United Nations Development
Programme. It has been billed as the first step in helping to evaluate
CSR in Pakistan’s corporate sector.
Jaweria Ather, a director of the commission, said her organization was
hoping to take the lead in providing a neutral forum for CSR in
Pakistan. She added: ‘Socially responsible behaviour can have a
tremendous impact for companies in terms of reputation, employee
morale, competitive edge and productivity.’
The commission has already held two seminars in Karachi that have
discussed the development of a national CSR strategy. Delegates have
included representatives of Engro Chemicals, Indus Motors, the Pakistan
Centre for Philanthropy, Procter & Gamble Pakistan, and Shell
Pakistan.
