US Environmental Protection Agency proposals to create a national system for business reporting of greenhouse gas emissions have been welcomed by the Carbon Disclosure Project, an investor alliance that encourages businesses to report their carbon data.

The carbon registry, announced by the Obama government, would apply to companies producing fossil fuels, industrial chemicals, cars and engines, along with any emitting more than 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. The EPA intends to introduce the registry for all sectors of the economy by 26 June.
