Seven US apparel companies have joined chambers of commerce in calling
on the Philippines government to stop political killings or risk losing
aid and investment. A letter of protest was sent to president Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo by local officials of American Eagle, Gap, Jones
Apparel, Liz Claiborne, Phillips-Van Heusen, Polo Ralph Lauren and
Wal-Mart.
Earlier a statement saying that violence has no place in a democracy
was issued by the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in the
Philippines, comprising business groups from Australia, Canada, Europe,
Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the US and the Philippine Association of
Multinational Companies.
