The ethical performance of listed Taiwanese companies improved markedly
last year, according to a second national analysis of CSR in the
country.
The latest annual survey of Taiwanese businesses, carried out by Global
View Magazine, found the average score for CSR performance given
to listed companies was 68 out of 100, ten points better than the
previous year. Main areas of good performance were on workers’ welfare,
labour relations, financial management and transparency, with much
poorer scores on community giving and involvement.
In all, just under a third of companies in the study made information
on their CSR performance publicly available in 2005, up by 10
percentage points on 2004.
Companies were marked on various criteria under seven main headings –
policy, management systems, transparency, environmental policy, fair
competition, labour relations, workers’ welfare, and ‘social
participation’ – with reference to standards such as the OECD
Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
Among the best performing companies were the Taiwan Semiconductor
Manufacturing Company, Delta Electronics, China Motor, President Chain
Store Corp, and E.SUN Financial Holding.
